I only got part of the voice mail because I’d forgotten to charge my phone and it cut out halfway through, then later when I recharged it I accidentally deleted the message and … well, you get the point.

I was invited to one of those battle recreations where grown men put on pretend suits of armour and play soldiers. I got as far as finding out when it was happening, where it was happening, what time it was happening, and then…nothing.

I wasn’t however expecting to be given a Roman outfit and a plastic spear as soon as I arrived; I assumed I was to be an audience member, not a participant!

Anyway, I joined the hoard of other soldiers and shook in my boots as we faced the enemy, then when the command to charge echoed across the field I found myself being unwillingly carried along,  only to be poked in the eye by one of the clumsy foe’s weapons.

You know what, I think this eye patch suits me,  I think I’ll get a pirate’s costume to go with it, arrrr!

    I understand that wars were rather hard on eyes…ears…arms & legs, etc. I’m sure you’d make a great pirate, but be sure you can swim. And avoid shark infested tropical seas.

    A pirate’s costume should fit the eye patch. I hope the eye will heal. It can be dangerous playing those games even with plastic weapons.

    It’s much better to watch than to be in those re-enactments. If you get a pirate costume, don’t get a real bird to go with it, they are messy.

    Ouch! And scary. Poked eyes, are no laughing matter.
    Don’t know that a pirate would be much safer – they can always make you walk the plank!

      I walked the plank once, off a fun pirate ship in Barbados – luckily there were people in the water waiting to rescue the ‘victims’!

    Love the riddle at the end of your recorded SSS!
    What a shock to think one was going to observe and then finding out participation was the name of the game. Yikes, what an outcome!

      I live not from the site of the Battle of Hastings and often attend the annual reenactment – no way would I wish to participate though!

    forgive my seemingly devoid of humor and imagination when it comes to ‘re-enacting’*, I enjoyed this Six as it has the quality that brings me back each week, the ease and flow of expert story-telling.

    I do not ‘get’ the attraction of this particular form of entertainment/diversion… (as, lol, my asterix’d comment will make un-artfully clear)

    Liked the audio …haven’t tried it on my Sixes… way too self-conscious

    *of whatever colour, over here we have Civil War en-enactments as well as revolutionary war. The only thing missing in re-enactments, in my aforementioned lack of humor and imagination is the crying and screaming of the wounded, the crying and screaming of the widowed and orphaned, the silent resolve of the suicidal post-traumatic veteran

      The one I attend is on Senlac Hill in the town of Battle where King Harold is said to have been killed by an arrow in the eye in 1066 rather than, in my case, injured by a plastic weapon to the eye in 2021! I can assure you it’s a very noisy affair which is carried out with extreme gusto, enthusiasm and realism by those participating.

      I originally referred to my skirmish as a re-enactment, but mispronounced it when making the audio! It was easier to change the script than to re-record!
