A sweet story…

for Friday Fictioneers

We are sitting around the kitchen table. Ma presses chocolates from a mould. My sister and I carefully wrap them. Pappa places them pretty boxes tied with ribbon.

We are at the Christmas market where Ma is selling her chocolates. I wander over to Father Christmas. From his sack, he produces a chocolate star and hands it to me. “It’s not as nice as Ma’s,” I say.  “I know!” he whispers in my ear.

We are standing beside a gravestone in the snow. We place chocolate hearts upon it. “Enjoy them Ma” my sister and I say.  “Sweet dreams, my love,” says Pappa as he turns and leads us away.

I would say it would make a great festive story but fear an elf would die of a heart attack due to sorrow. 🙂

You captured the essence of family and loss. Christmas isn’t a good time for many.

Very touching story. Family is paying their respect to Ma, who would make wonderful chocolates when alive. Father admitting his chocolates not as good, is also touching.

I like the way you jump forward in time in each paragraph. Sad and sweet.

A lovely sad story, Keith, which matches my mood this week after losing a friend.

Was she eating too much of the merchandise? That’s probably what will do me in.

Suddenly Im in the mood for chocolate. Wait, who am I kidding? When am I not?

My hat goes off to any mother who can keep her kids from devouring all the chocolates before they go to market! Nice touch, that Santa admits, hers are better than his!

Aww, that’s so sad, Keith! Nice that the family all had such sweet memories of Ma, but it won’t be her chocolates they miss most…

    Bummer, but oh the memories.
Both of my parents loved to make candy. Mom would make coconut bon-bons (dipped in chocolate) every Christmas season. I sure miss them.

It’s sad but very sweet. Slices of life combined in one piece. Very well-crafted.

This tastes like 70% dark chocolate. Bitter, with just a hint of sweetness. My heart goes out to them.
