I was in an Italian restaurant with Rosey the other evening.
“Scusami calamari” she called out. I pointed out she’d just tried to attract the attention of a squid!
It’s ‘scusami cameriere‘ I said. Her second attempt was more successful, and Adriano the waiter came to our table with some menus.
“Una birra per favore” I said. Rosey requested a Limoncello.
“With ice Signora?” he asked.
“Yessa pleasa” said Rosey, “but fresh ice, none of that frozen stuff”. She thought her quip was quite funny, but Adriano gave us a dismissive look as if to say ‘I makka d’ joka round ‘ere’.
She’s always more interested in others’ conversations than ours and she overheard something mildly scandalous under discussion at the next table. Rosey, who had a fork of sauce-laden spaghetti en-route to her open mouth, suddenly froze. The spaghetti, however, decided not to take part in her game of statues and slid from the fork and down the front of her once white blouse.
I had gelato to follow and she had tiramisu, most of which made it to her mouth. We’re going for a Chinese next week. Wish me luck!

Rosey has my sympathy. It takes real talent to keep spaghetti on a fork at the best of times. She will learn, as I have, that white blouses only go with Alfredo sauces and blanc manges.
And liguistically, getting the right combination of sounds… I could tell you some real bloopers that went over in Montreal… like the company advertising gloves with a “Mesh back for snug fit.” They used a translation programme to produce the French version, which said en francais, “Netted back for comfortable apoplectic fit.

Haha, that’s brilliant! On my travels abroad I’ve seen some really funny signs aimed at tourists written in English that gave completely the wrong message.Thanks so much, Christine.

Ha ha ha, so, in addition to her issues with maintaining balance on a bicycle, Rosey cannot balance her Spaghetti too. Another ‘quality’ we two seem to have in common 🙂

Being single I eat alone a lot, so I can’t help but tune in to other’s conversations! I’ve actually got ideas for many a story from what I’ve overheard!

Like Iain, I wonder if chopsticks will be in her hands in the Chinese restaurant. Everyone in the restaurant will need protective eye wear. The next time you meet and she is in white, head somewhere for vanilla yogurt or soup broth.

The stain remains! She still wears it; says it a creation by an artisan clothing designer. I daren’t say what I think it looks like!

One of my children always seems to be wearing white when we eat spaghetti. She’s not the neat one.

I once suggested Rosey should get a large plastic refuse sack, cut a hole in it to put her head through, and wear it as an all over clothes protector. I meant it as a joke, so and when she turned up at the pub actually wearing one I was rendered speechless!

Welcome to the crazy world of Rosey P! What I like best about a bookstore is the smell when you walk through the door! I’ll certainly come looking for you the first opportunity. However, I’m not sure bringing Rosey is a very good idea. She caused chaos in her local library the other day and they were still sorting out the shelves when I dropped in this morning!

This is the reason why I never wear white to an Italian restaurant or order long pasta. This made me laugh with the “ice”.
